My Fallen Friend

The day you walked through the door and looked at me

You stole my heart at a simple glance

The fluffy, golden fur was the first thing for me to see

Your soft coat invited my hand and I sat there watching you dance

The clumsiness you had when you were young made you unique

To see you wag your tail that shook your body was always a pleasure

But you never let anything slow you down or make you weak

To hold you close and feel your love has always been my greatest treasure

From that day, you were my closest friend and I kept you close

The warmth you gave off had some kind of power, it was comfort and calm

So powerful that every time I saw you, I wanted another dose

Your touch and warmth was as healing as an emotional balm

The bigger and older you got, the more my love for you grew

But no matter how big you got, you still looked at me the way you always had

You remained so gentle and so calm, even with the craziness around you

You only showed joy but never revealed if you were angry or sad

The kindness you showed in your gentle eyes

Was reflected in the way you acted around everyone

You would be there for the best of times, the worst of times, next to you time flies

You could drown out my hurt by being you and just having fun

Just the way you were was enough to captivate and enchant all

The way you would react to the smallest touches brought the biggest smiles

And you would always come running when anyone would call

The energy you had and gave off would keep people on their feet for the longest miles

The smile you had when you saw someone watching you would brighten the day

With you around I was able to see that it is ok to show my softer side

Through you, I had learnt that with any problem, there is always another way

You were the one who dragged me out my shell and showed me not to hide

Even though you were unable to talk

I could almost understand you, as if we had become connected

On two legs I stand and on four legs you walk

The support you gave was greater than expected

You were the greatest thing to happen to someone like me

When I felt alone I would feel a nudge, I would look down and see you there

There are no words that can express the thankfulness I feel for setting me free

I could always read in your eyes that you really did care

For all you have done, you will always have a special place in my heart

To some you are a beast, an animal, but to me you were something more

You were and always will be my closest friend and we will never be apart

You will always be close, in my heart, deep down in my core

But now that you have gone, there is emptiness that will never fill

Here you were one minute and the next you were gone

That your life was taken because on an illness, it was never your will

But through me you will always live on

When I heard of your passing, I could not stop my falling tears

My heart has broken but I understand, your suffering has come to an end

The news that I was given confirmed all of my deepest fears

But the memory of you will help me and get my heart to mend

I wish I was there when it happened so I could hold you one last time

So that I could look into your eyes and tell you how much I love you

If I knew you would die that day, I would have been there, even if I had to climb

Because for those that I would move mountains for, you were one of the few

I would have done anything to keep you alive, but I know you in a better place

My sorrow will be with me for a long time, but you are now at peace

You will never be forgotten, I will always remember your gentle face

The knowledge that all your pain and suffering is gone will put me at ease

And with a heavy heart, I say goodbye for now

But we will meet again when it is my time to cross the line

Until then, I will remember your love and will make others remember somehow

When we meet again, it will be like before and all will be fine

You were more than just a pet, you were my greatest and closest friend

It was a friendship that was created and solidified the first time we met

I'm grateful to have been part of your life, until the unexpected end

Farewell Bruno my boy, my promise is that you, I will never forget.
