A Letter to the Fallen

In memory of Lance Corporal Michael West

1892-1918 aged 26.

You heard your countries call

You stood before the flag and gave an oath

For country and family, you honour them both

Take up arms and carry them to the fall

Stand upon a battlefield so vast

Obeying the command of those in charge

Facing the unknown, a burden so large

Hearing the snap and hiss of rounds flying past

The screams of pain as bullets strike their mark

The sounds of those next to you hitting the ground

In the dying hours of the dark, you hear the sound

The next one is yours, sent by a firearms bark

Some make it back fine, others as broken souls

Many don't come back at all, this is for them

They gave the greatest sacrifice, remember them

They guard still, standing by countless holes

If they passed on fighting or peacefully asleep

They are still veterans, they will not be forgot

Honour them, if they died in bed or got shot

Honour them for your safety they tried to keep.
